These antique pictures were drawn and etched on laid paper by Giovanni Battista Piranesi for his book Le Antichità Romane (Roman Antiquities) published in 1756. Laid paper has a ribbed texture due to its manufacturing process, and was the predominant kind of paper produced during the pre-mechanical period of European papermaking (12th century - 19th century).
A collector brought them to us wanting them displayed in a fairly simple, modern way while keeping in mind the age of the artwork.
We chose a distressed-finished black painted moulding with an inner contrasting ridge in metallic foil - 415301 - from our Canaletto collection which ties in well with the dark grey colours in the artwork.
Our Framers used Timecare CottonCore mountboard which is fully compliant with Museum Level (Level 1) framing, according to the standards set by the Fine Art Trade Guild, of which we are proud members. This board - made from 100% cotton fibre - is free from lignin, sulphur and OBAs (Optical Brightening Agents).
To protect the artwork from fading - and to reduce reflections to less than 1% - we finished the frame with museum-grade glass which contains 99% UV filter.
Our Framers have been framing precious antique artwork - made with all sorts of different materials - since 2006, so you can rest assured that we treat every single piece with the utmost care and respect, framing it to whichever Fine Art Trade Guild level of service you require.
