Early in 2025, a good customer of ours brought in this ancient artefact, wanting to both preserve and display it.
The bronze nail was found in the ancient harbour of Amathus, 11km east of Limassol in Cyprus. Now an archaeological site, Amathus was built during the Hellenistic period (late 4th century BC) and lies mostly underwater but remains one of the best-preserved ancient port structures in the eastern Mediterranean.
Together we chose to double mount the nail against a Silurian Blue undermount with a 2mm 'reveal' of a slightly deeper blue window mount beneath the top mount, as a suggestion of the colour of the sea around the harbour where the nail was found.
In another nod to the maritime theme, we also used a stained wood from our Coastal Woods collection of moulding - deep enough to accommodate the relic - and created bespoke spacers from the Silurian Blue mountboard to cover its inner edges.
To finish, we added a a round-ended name plate in stainless steel with details of the archaeological find.
