This large colourful oil on canvas as brought in to us for framing in 2024 by a couple who'd just brought it back from Italy where they'd been for their honeymoon.
As the canvas had arrived rolled up in a tube, our first job was to stretch it around wooden stretcher bars. We then fixed into position in a float frame - a.k.a. tray frame or canvas box frame - made from a picture frame moulding with a black stain which showed the wood grain through.
Our customers chose to have a 1cm shadow gap surrounding the artwork, and also to have it set back in the frame. Sometimes, we’re asked to position the canvas flush with the front of the frame and/or right up to the inner edges of the frame i.e. without a shadow gap.
It's simply down to personal preference.
