This interesting collection of Kensitas cigarette cards features various flags of the British Empire, and was brought to us to be framed in 2021.
Originally issued in 1934, the cards were printed on silk (rather than the usual cardboard) before being attached to a paper backing, and are now considered highly collectible. They were discontinued in order to save paper during World War II, and never fully reintroduced afterwards.
Although each card had been stored in its original glassine envelope, some of them had frayed edges, so - to ensure every window in the mount was the same size - we measured the smallest card, and made sure all 25 apertures were cut to fit a card of this size.
We double mounted the cards by placing a pine green mount over the top of a deep khaki green mount, revealing a couple of mm of the khaki colour, which gives each item just the right amount of definition.
We then created a frame using a pine picture moulding with a gold foil finish from our Andover collection; with the military colours of both mounts and frame suiting the period of time between two world wars as well as complementing the cream silk. We completed the display with Conservation-level glass, containing 99% UV filter, to prevent the cards from fading,
