Framing of 11 medals

These 11 medals were sentimentally valuable to our customer, a record of their ancestor's brave service during the Second World War and after, and they wished for them to be protected but also regarded by future generations.

When medals are framed with their ribbons but without a mounting bar, we can stitch them into place to hold them securely. We typically hold the ribbon in place with two individual stitches at the top, and then run a loop of transparent thread around the thinnest portion of the medal at the neck, to stop them from swinging side-to-side.

The moulding chosen, ref. 3921AG, is popular for medals, as it has a narrow front profile but plenty of depth to allow us to fit the medals in without touching the front glass.

For this project, the customer chose a marvellous dark blue suedette mountboard for the background, which has a stunning velvet surface finish. We also filled in the inside faces of the frame with spacers made from the same board, for a full velvet box.

We supplied this frame with Tru Vue™ Museum Clear glass, which provides 99% protection from harmful UV light, along with a stunning low-reflection clarity.
